Cuban Sandwich

Last night I was watching Bobby Flay’s Throwdown with Chef Nick Vazquez, owner of Azucar in Jersey City, New Jersey. They were competing to see who could make the best Cuban Sandwich. I usually watch each episode and then immediately go online to look for the recipes that are featured so I can try them out. After watching the show I realized my search was not necessary because I think my Cuban Sandwich is just as good as Bobby’s or Nick’s. The marinade for the pork is a key ingredient in the sandwich.

I first made this last year. A friend gave me a basic recipe for the sandwich which I tweaked. I knew that the pork would need a good marinade. On a whim I used this Cuban Pork marinade. Home run.

My limited understanding of a true Cuban sandwich is that it will not have mayonnaise or peppers. This recipe is a very tasty “non-traditional” Cuban sandwich.

INGREDIENTS:
1/4 pound thinly sliced smoked ham
1/2 pound thinly sliced cold roast pork
1/4 pound thinly sliced Swiss cheese
1/3 cup diced dill pickles
1/3 cup diced jarred mild banana peppers
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
4 tablespoons yellow mustard
4 Kaiser rolls or rustic rolls, split

DIRECTIONS:
Combine pickles and peppers in a small bowl. Split rolls in half; top the top half with mayonnaise and bottom half with mustard using 1 tablespoon of each for each sandwich. Layer ham, roast pork, pickle mixture and cheese onto bottom half, finishing with cheese on top. Set tops of rolls in place and press down to flatten sandwiches. Either brush the sandwiches with some melted butter or spray them with nonstick cooking spray.

Use a panini grill pan with press or skillet with a pot to weigh down the sandwiches and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side over medium-low heat. Serve immediately.

Servings: 4

I make a version of this sandwich using muenster cheese, turkey ham & sliced turkey breast that I adapted from the Joy of Cooking. Nothing like a good sandwich!

I watched this Throwdown too and it totally made me want to run out and get one of those sandwiches! Would you believe I’ve never had a Cuban sandwich before? I need to fix that ASAP. That sandwich looked AMAZING. I bet Ari could make a delicious one too, I’m gonna bookmark your recipe!

Sorry I have been away for so long. my office used to be down the street from a great little midtown cuban place that made killer cuban sandwiches but we moved and I haven’t been able to ind another place since. One thing I have done with Cubans is make them as loaded potato skins for parties – replacing the bread with a potato. Bueno !

You made them for the Super Bowl right? I remember thinking what a fantastic idea to make them as loaded potato skins. It really is hard to find a good Cuban. I’m still looking in this area.
