The weather in this area has been practically perfect for several weeks now. Warm during the day and cool at night. Is this what it is like to live in San Francisco? The crisp weather signals my belly it’s time to get back in the kitchen and hibernate for a bit. There are so many things I want to make. Most of the recipes on my to do list are things that would qualify as game day food. Needless to say they are not very healthy. I felt like before I indulged in some wings or nachos I needed to get a couple of staple meals prepped for future use.
There are two things I need to have on hand. Soup and sauce (yes sauce not gravy). Colder weather means an abundance of germs that will surely make their way into my household. Chicken soup always warms my soul and soothes my belly. I made a Chicken, Ranch and Rice Soup recipe from Jenny at Picky Palate. Tasty and very easy to make. If you have not checked out her site take some time to see all the wonderful recipes she has to offer. She also has lots of great giveaways for you to enter.
I have several friends who have been kind enough to share their sauce recipes. I’ll try and post some of them in the future. Today I wanted to try my go to girl Kittencal’s marinara recipe. I omitted the onion and added a package of sweet Italian sausage. I also increased the sugar from 2 teaspoons to a 1/4 cup. I like my sauce to be sweet.
The sauce came out sublime. Just the right amount of seasoning. I’m sure it will taste even better once the flavors meld a little bit more.
My favorite part of the day was when I decided last minute to throw in some chocolate chip cookies for a treat after dinner. I used the Nestle Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe with one big exception. I used Ghirardelli 60% Cacao Bittersweet Chips instead of semi-sweet morsels. Hours later the chips were still gooey. The cookies are so rich that you only need one or two to satiate a chocolate craving.
Next week will probably include a test run of a chili recipe I’ve been waiting to try and then some cornbread on the side. If you get a chance let me know what is on your Sunday menu.
