Spinach Creamsicle Smoothie
Now and then I like to step away from my regular meals and incorporate healthy smoothies into my menu. When I’m working out on a regular basis I make a whey protein smoothie as a post-workout treat. On days where I am not burning up the treadmill or sweating it in Zumba I still want to get my smoothie fix.
The blogosphere has been abuzz about the wonders of spinach smoothies so I thought I would give them a try. I now know why there is so much hype about them. Guess what? They’re good. They’re so good in fact that I have found myself making a smoothie on a regular basis. I’m craving them. It is a huge accomplishment for any recipe to make me crave vegetables and fruit. Kudos to whoever came up with the idea for these smoothies.
The best part of the smoothie is that you cannot taste the spinach. I love spinach but I was not too thrilled with the idea of drinking it cold.
I had a lot of fruit to work with. I wanted to play it safe on my first attempt using flavors that I knew would work together. I made a smoothie using orange juice, frozen bananas and spinach. The frozen bananas gave the smoothie a great taste and texture that was enhanced by the sweet freshly squeezed orange juice. There are so many ways you can make this. The combinations are endless: peaches, pineapples, pears, apples, bananas, strawberries, bananas and mangos can be combined with the spinach. I’ve also heard that kale works well in place of the spinach. So many great combinations to try.
It may not look appetizing when you first put everything in the blender but don’t be turned off by its appearance.
If you make this let me know what combination you use.

I’ve been drinking a ton of smoothies lately, but I haven’t been making them myself! I think I’m going to give this recipe a try tomorrow.

Am also a huge fan of protein shakes, not so much the spinach but I think you’ve inspired me to give it a try next time I work out. Or the next time I have a smoothie, which, in all honestly, will probably happen much sooner than my next work out.

This looks like a nutritional disaster to me. Where’s the protein?
Sure the fruit and spinach supply many needed nutrients, but made with orange juice and no protein it’s going to provide a HUGE blod sugar/ insulin spike and lead to a crash shortly after.
You need a substantial dose of highly digestible protein to help balance. I also think making it with an orange juic base provides way too much sugar in one serving.
