Bocuse d’Or USA 2012

The first thing that hits you is not the smell, it’s the music. As we entered the competition area, there was an infectious blast of techno music to greet us. I don’t know if the music motivated the chefs to kick it into high gear but I was ready to jump back there and get moving.

This year the Bocuse d’Or USA competition took place at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. It’s a national competition where chefs from across the country compete for the chance to represent the U.S.A. in the main event in 2013 in Lyon, France. Up to this point I only knew what I saw on television, snippets and close-ups of chefs feverishly working to finish their dishes in the five and a half hours allotted. Each chef has a group of spectators there to support them. Between the music, the buzz of the press and the cheers of the spectators the energy was electric.

Cheesy-Garlicy-Peppery Biscuits {Secret Recipe Club}

For this month’s Secret Recipe Club, I was assigned Suzanne’s blog Thru the Bugs on My Windshield. I love her take on life. The quote on her site says it all: “Life is like a windshield. There’s gonna be a few bug splats along the way.” Suzanne loves spending time with her ever-expanding family, taking pictures that make people smile and cooking traditional comfort food.

Philly Swappers (A Philly Food Swapping Event)

Our local food community is very active. We find various ways to get together and hang out. One of my favorite gatherings is our local food swap. The event, hosted by Philly Swappers, is part silent auction/part village marketplace/part fun-loving open house where your homemade creations (breads, preserves, special concoctions, canned goods, etc.) become your own personal currency for use in swapping with other participants.
